How to Run Engaging Online Sessions That Learners Love

2 min read Skill-Hive team

Knowing your subject is only half of teaching. The teachers who get the best reviews on Skill-Hive also know how to make an online session feel personal, focused and worth coming back for. Here's what they do.

Before the session

  • Read the booking message. Learners often tell you their level and goal when they book. Mentioning it in your first minute shows you're prepared.
  • Test your setup. Check your camera, microphone and lighting a few minutes early. Face a window or lamp rather than sitting with a bright light behind you.
  • Have one clear outcome in mind. Plan what the learner should be able to do by the end — not just what you'll cover.

During the session

  • Talk less than half the time. Ask questions, get the learner doing the task, and let them try before you correct. People remember what they do far better than what they hear.
  • Check understanding often. Instead of "Does that make sense?", ask them to explain it back or try a quick example.
  • Share your screen with purpose. Show examples, then switch back to the learner working on their own.
  • Praise specifically. "Your timing on that chord change was much smoother" is far more useful than "Good job".

At the end

Save the last five minutes to recap what was covered, name one thing the learner did well and agree on one thing to practise before next time. Learners who leave with a clear next step are much more likely to book again.

A good session ends with the learner knowing exactly what to practise — and wanting to come back to show you.

After the session

Add a quick progress note for the learner in your dashboard while the lesson is fresh, and send a short follow-up message with any links or exercises you mentioned. Small touches like this are what turn a first booking into a regular learner — and a five-star review.
